Expandify uses a standard 25-tonne Franna crane for most installations. This crane type is compact, highly manoeuvrable, and specifically suited for residential sites with standard access conditions.
The 25-tonne crane is ideal for sites that meet:
3.5m minimum access width on level ground
4.5m minimum overhead clearance
Maximum slope of 200mm per 5m
This crane is included in the builder’s standard installation cost for all Complete Package homes and is assessed during the Site Assessment phase to ensure suitability.
If your site has restricted access — such as:
Overhead powerlines
Trees or narrow street frontage
Steep driveways or rear-block placement
Obstructions like fences or adjacent dwellings
In certain situations, a larger crane may be required. This is quoted separately based on site conditions and distance from the drop-off point to the install area.
For example, in one Expandify project where the home needed to be lifted over powerlines and an existing dwelling, a 300-tonne crane was used to reach a backyard location 42 metres from the road.
The cost of this crane was approximately $30,000, but it was still significantly more cost-effective than a traditional on-site stick build given the access challenges and time savings.
All crane coordination is handled by Expandify. For DIY Kit customers, crane hire is still arranged by Expandify and quoted based on location and access constraints.
Crane requirements are fully confirmed during your Site Assessment and included in your final quote so there are no surprises later.
